Moon! Sun! Shiny and silver,
Moon! Sun! Shiny and gold.

History & Background
History & Origin
"Moon and Sun" is an original song written for this collection that draws on one of the oldest and most universal traditions in lullaby writing: the invocation of the natural world — moon, sun, light — as a protective and settling presence for a sleeping or sleepy child.
The pairing of moon and sun is deliberate: moon for night and silver light, sun for day and golden warmth. Together they represent the full cycle of a child's world, the silver light that watches over sleep and the golden light that greets the waking. "Shine until they grow old" is a wish for lifelong protection expressed in the simplest possible terms.
This kind of nature invocation appears in lullaby traditions across many cultures. The Celtic tradition frequently addresses the moon directly as a guardian of sleep; Indigenous American lullabies often invoke the sun as a father-figure of warmth and life; Japanese lullabies speak of the moon watching the child's cradle. "Moon and Sun" is part of this universal family while being entirely its own.
The song's brevity is intentional: it has the quality of a blessing or a charm rather than a narrative, said or sung over a child quickly and quietly, a short prayer to the natural world to keep watch through the night and through the years.
